5 Postpartum Myths Debunked

  1. End to postpartum period:
NOOOOO!! Once you have had a baby, you have always had a baby. Once you have had a baby, your body has special needs, and your body has changed and is different. You are not the same person you were before having a baby. No matter if your last is 20 years old, you could still be having aches/pains and experiencing muscle weaknesses as if you had a baby six weeks ago.

  2. Peeing after having a baby is the price of motherhood:
NOOOOOO!!! Peeing when jumping, exercising, coughing, sneezing, or laughing can happen; however, it isn’t the price of motherhood. Start with a pelvic floor therapist specializing in postpartum corrective exercise (if you do not know of one in your area, you can find one by your area, reach out to me: kat@kat.fit.

  3. I haven’t bounced back yet; therefore, I need to work harder:
NOOOOOO!!! You may never completely bounce back, and it’s okay. Stretch marks, stretched skin, saggy boobs, etc., are expected, but it does not define you or your worth. What you see on Instagram is not normal and is a highlight reel. No matter how hard you hit the gym, skimp meals, diet, etc., you cannot erase having a baby. Most postpartum recovery is retraining the brain to reconnect with the body and the core muscles.

  4. Sex is painful postpartum. Another price of motherhood:
NOOOOOO!!! That is not the case. Trauma to the soft tissues can occur in the birthing process, and hormones change. However, it should be short-term. Seek a certified pelvic floor physical therapist.  If you do not know of any, contact me (kat@kat.fit)! I have several I refer to.

  5.  Surgery is the only option to fix my postpartum body and my diastasis:
NOOOOOO!!! There are many ways to improve composition and body function. Strengthening your body from the inside out and establishing the mind-body connection to your body function helps improve your strength, confidence, and mobility while decreasing pain. Working with a qualified trainer specializing in postpartum corrective exercise (ahem, me!) will help you see the results you want.
