What if you went to bed one night a fully functional person to wake up in the middle of the night paralyzed from the neck down and put on a ventilator, later to be diagnosed with Chronic Inflammatory Demylenating Polyneuropathy (CIDP)? What if you were diagnosed with Stage IV Mantle Cell Lymphoma Cancer, would you give up or choose to defy the odds?
Defying the odds is exactly what Laurietta Oakleaf is doing. At age 16 she was diagnosed with Epilepsy, and then in 2001 she went to bed and woke up in the middle of the night paralyzed from the neck down. With the diagnosis of CIDP, doctors informed her she would never walk again, however, the doctors did not know the depth of moxie Laurietta has. After receiving the diagnosis, she was determined to walk again no matter how long it took. She utilized her diagnosis as a wakeup call to reaffirm her dreams and passion with working with horses. She to continue to follow her dreams in her passion of dressage riding. She is currently training for the 2016 Paralympics in Rio.
Her message is simple; she wants to inspire those around her to continue to pursue their dreams, their goals no matter the obstacles in front of them. Too often we let those around us, a diagnosis, or a lack of believing in ourselves prevent us from taking action towards our dreams.
So, what is your dream? Will you defy the odds? The time to take action is now. It is time to stop waiting, wanting, wishing, and making excuses. Write your dream down and wake up each day reminding yourself of your dream and what steps you will take today to achieve it. You may never get another tomorrow, so get on your way TODAY.
